We hear them communicating while still in their eggs and witness how each of the siblings develops at their own pace and to what lengths their mother will go to ensure they are all safe.
The story was written in consultancy and cooperation with Dr. Marisa Tellez from the Crocodile Research Coalition, a Belize-based nonprofit established in January 2016 that seeks to preserve crocodiles and their environments throughout Central America and the Caribbean to ensure the long-term sustainability of biodiversity in the region.
What your kids will learn about crocodiles from this story:
- Crocodile hatchlings begin talking while still in their eggs before hatching.
- Their mother hears them talking and rushes to the nest.
- Commonly, some of the hatchlings develop quicker than others, like Neilos. But other hatchlings might need some help from their mother to make it out of their eggs.
- Their mother carries the hatchlings in her mouth to a small pool once they hatch.
- There is often a hatchling who is left behind and can’t make it out of their egg themself, like Croco.
- Neilos was the name of the god of the river Nile in Greek mythology. The Nile is home to a large population of crocodiles.
